Initiative can work together and in co-responsibility to face challenges and overcome obstacles in a coordinated manner for the benefit of society. It was in 1897, when Bridget Driscoll was crossing the street in London, England, accompanied by her teenage daughter and a friend, when a motor vehicle ran over her, taking her life. Since that date, the United Nations designated August 17 as World Pedestrian Day, in a global effort with the main objective: that walking on the street should not be the cause of accidents or deaths. Mexican Red Cross, Reacciona por la Vida and Liga Peatonal work to generate strategies and protocols that help raise awareness among the population about the importance of respecting pedestrians, who at all times are the most vulnerable when using the road.
According to the Technical Secretariat of the National Council for the Prevention of Accidents (STCONAPRA), more than 6 thousand pedestrians lost their lives in 2017 due to road incidents, which represents 41% of the total number of victims due to this cause. Within the framework of Pedestrian Day, which is Guatemala Mobile Number List commemorated on August 17, Fernando Suinaga Cárdenas, national president of the Mexican Red Cross, assured that so far this year, volunteers from the institution have assisted nearly 20,000 people injured by a collision and falls on public roads, that is, 31 percent of ambulance emergencies nationwide. Suinaga Cárdenas pointed out that, over the years, pedestrians have lost the space that was built for their transportation and that today, avenues, roads and streets have been built on the pedestrian paths themselves.
He also mentioned that many sidewalks have been occupied by other fixed elements such as commercial stands, poles, restaurant tables, among others, which is dangerous for people who are forced to use the vehicular stream to continue their journey. For her part, Daniela Zepeda, technical secretary of Reaccionar por la Vida, commented that all people at some point in the day are pedestrians, so it is important to guarantee that we all move safely through the streets. Zepeda commented that according to the Origin-Destination Survey of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), 66 percent of the population of the Metropolitan Zone of the Valley of Mexico makes at least one of their trips on foot. Aldo González Barrera, General Coordinator of the Peatonal League, said that girls and boys, older adults and people with disabilities, are the populations most vulnerable to poor urban planning.
